Retroid has officially pulled back the curtain on its upcoming Pocket Nova handheld, a device designed specifically for retro gaming enthusiasts who have long been asking for a premium 4:3 gaming experience. The Pocket Nova combines a nostalgic design with modern hardware, making it one of the most anticipated handheld emulators of 2026.

The standout feature is its 4.5-inch AMOLED display, which offers a 1280×960 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a classic 4:3 aspect ratio. This makes the Pocket Nova particularly well-suited for retro consoles such as the SNES, PlayStation 1, Game Boy Advance, Sega Dreamcast, GameCube, and PlayStation 2, allowing games to fill the screen without the black bars common on modern widescreen devices.

Retroid has also confirmed multiple color options at launch, including several translucent designs inspired by classic gaming hardware. Early promotional images showcase a compact horizontal form factor, dual analog sticks, front-facing speakers, and improved ergonomics aimed at long gaming sessions.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the handheld's processor. Recent disclosures indicate the Pocket Nova will be powered by Qualcomm's QCS8550 chipset, a processor that delivers performance comparable to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 found in many flagship Android devices. This level of power could allow the Nova to handle demanding emulation for systems such as the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Wii, and even some Nintendo Switch titles.

While Retroid has yet to announce official pricing or a release date, community reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Many retro gaming fans view the Pocket Nova as the device they've been waiting for—a compact handheld that combines a high-end OLED screen, powerful internals, and a display perfectly tailored for classic games. If Retroid can deliver on its promises at a competitive price, the Pocket Nova could become one of the standout retro gaming handhelds of the year.
