Meta is facing increasing pressure from the U.S. government as federal officials reportedly urge the company to submit its most advanced artificial intelligence models for voluntary security evaluations before they are released to the public. The move comes amid growing concerns in Washington over the rapidly expanding capabilities of frontier AI systems and their potential national security implications.

According to reports, Meta is currently the only major U.S. AI developer that has not formally agreed to participate in the federal review process. Companies such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, xAI, and Anthropic have already worked with government agencies to evaluate advanced models for cybersecurity, safety, and other potential risks.

The initiative stems from a June executive order that established a voluntary framework allowing federal agencies to examine powerful AI systems before broader deployment. Under the program, government experts can assess a model's capabilities, vulnerabilities, and potential misuse scenarios while operating under confidentiality protections designed to safeguard proprietary technology.

The push for greater oversight follows heightened concerns about advanced AI models and their ability to identify cybersecurity weaknesses, automate sophisticated digital attacks, and potentially impact critical infrastructure. Intelligence agencies and policymakers have increasingly warned that next-generation AI systems could dramatically reshape the cybersecurity landscape in the coming years.

Despite being the last major holdout, Meta has signaled that it broadly supports the administration's goals and is reportedly working toward an agreement. If finalized, the arrangement would bring Meta's AI efforts in line with much of the broader industry while potentially giving federal officials greater insight into the capabilities of future versions of the company's AI models.
