Canadian Drone Pilot Fined $7.4K For Flying Near Wildfire

A Canadian court has issued the largest fine ever for flying a drone illegally after an Alberta National Park visitor reportedly flew too close to a wildfire.

After an incident which caused an hour long halt of a 8 helicopter firefighting mission on Chetamon Mountain in Jasper National Park this past September when a drone was spotted during the operation, Aircraft owner Rajwinder Singh has been charged with a fine.

The Canadian aviation law states that no aircraft may fly within a 5 mile radius of a wildfire for the safety purposes of the firefighting aircrafts. Resource conservation officer, Dave Argument, mentioned 4 other lawsuits filed at the time of the Jasper Park wildfire as he expressed his dire concerns regarding force-grounding firefighting aircrafts mid-duty and the danger posed as being forced to do so.

The court has given Singh until June 8, 2023 to cover the fine.
