The UK's push to expand clean energy could soon reshape parts of the countryside after a billionaire investor announced plans to commit £35 billion toward developing a network of small modular reactors (SMRs). The investment aims to accelerate the deployment of next-generation nuclear technology as Britain works to strengthen its energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and meet growing electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, and expanding data centers.
Unlike traditional nuclear power plants, SMRs are designed to be factory-built and assembled on-site, making them faster and potentially less expensive to deploy. Supporters believe these compact reactors could provide reliable, low-carbon electricity for decades while complementing renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. The new funding is expected to support reactor construction, infrastructure development, and the broader nuclear supply chain across the UK.
The proposal, however, has already sparked debate.
