The long-awaited six-seat Tesla Model Y has officially arrived in the United States, giving families and EV enthusiasts a more spacious alternative to the standard crossover. After first launching in China, where it quickly became one of Tesla's most popular variants, the new Model Y L (Long Wheelbase) is now available to order in the U.S. and Puerto Rico with a starting price of $61,990 (roughly $62,000).
Unlike the previous optional seven-seat Model Y, the Model Y L features a premium 2-2-2 seating configuration with second-row captain's chairs, providing significantly easier access to the third row while offering improved comfort for all six passengers. The SUV rides on a wheelbase that is approximately six inches longer than the standard Model Y, resulting in additional legroom, headroom, and cargo space without dramatically changing the vehicle's familiar design.
Performance remains a major selling point despite the larger footprint. Tesla estimates the dual-motor all-wheel-drive Model Y L can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds while delivering an EPA-estimated 325 miles of driving range on a full charge. The new model also includes upgraded interior amenities such as heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain's chairs, a larger 16-inch center touchscreen, an 8-inch rear passenger display, and power-folding third-row seats.
The Model Y L arrives at a pivotal moment for Tesla. With federal EV incentives changing and competition intensifying from both domestic and overseas automakers, Tesla is expanding its lineup with premium variants rather than introducing entirely new vehicles. The company hopes the larger Model Y will appeal to buyers who need additional seating but don't want to move up to a full-size SUV, especially following the decline of the Model X's role in Tesla's lineup.
Orders for the Model Y L are now open, with customer deliveries expected to begin later this year. For shoppers seeking a practical electric SUV with genuine three-row usability, Tesla's newest offering may finally provide the blend of performance, range, and family-friendly space many buyers have been waiting for.
