The future of PlayStation is officially digital.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will discontinue physical disc production for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, marking one of the biggest shifts in the gaming industry's history. After the transition takes effect, every new PlayStation title—whether developed by Sony or a third-party publisher—will be sold exclusively through digital storefronts like the PlayStation Store and other digital retailers. Games already released or scheduled to launch on disc before the 2028 cutoff will not be affected.

According to Sony, the decision reflects changing consumer habits, with digital game purchases now accounting for the overwhelming majority of PlayStation software sales. By eliminating physical media, the company expects to streamline game distribution, reduce manufacturing costs, and focus more heavily on expanding its digital ecosystem and online services.

For gamers, however, the announcement is bittersweet. Physical game discs have long offered benefits such as collecting, lending games to friends, trading them in for credit, and preserving titles independently of online storefronts. Moving to an all-digital model raises concerns about long-term game ownership, storage requirements, resale options, and reliance on internet access for downloads and future access to purchased content.

The move also follows Sony's broader push toward digital services, including the planned shutdown of the PlayStation Store on legacy platforms like the PS3 and PS Vita over the next year. Combined with the growing popularity of digital downloads and subscription services, Sony's latest announcement signals that physical media is quickly becoming a thing of the past for modern gaming.

While collectors may be disappointed, Sony believes the transition better reflects how today's players purchase and experience games. Beginning in 2028, the PlayStation era of opening a brand-new game disc will officially come to an end.
