The European Union’s effort to remove Huawei equipment from critical telecommunications networks could cost taxpayers far more than previously acknowledged, with the total financial impact potentially reaching €40 billion.

The figure would represent a major increase over earlier estimates from Brussels and highlights the enormous expense involved in dismantling and replacing telecommunications infrastructure that has already been deployed across Europe.

For years, Huawei has been a major supplier of telecommunications equipment, including hardware used in mobile networks. However, concerns over national security, data protection, and potential ties to the Chinese government have led European governments to reassess the company’s role in critical infrastructure.

Removing Huawei equipment would require telecommunications providers to replace existing hardware, redesign portions of their networks, and carry out extensive installation and testing work. Those costs could ultimately be passed on to consumers or supported through public funding, placing a significant burden on taxpayers.

The potential €40 billion price tag also exposes the difficult balance governments face between security concerns and the financial realities of upgrading national infrastructure. While officials may view removing high-risk equipment as necessary, replacing technology across multiple countries is a complex and expensive process.

The dispute could also intensify debate over how quickly Europe should move to restrict Chinese technology companies. Supporters of the crackdown argue that national security risks justify the expense, while critics may question whether governments underestimated the long-term financial consequences.

If the higher estimate proves accurate, the Huawei purge could become one of the most expensive technology-related infrastructure overhauls in Europe’s history. The figure serves as a reminder that geopolitical decisions involving critical technology can carry enormous costs long after the initial policy announcements are made.
