eBay Pays $55.7M to Settle Lawsuit Over Harassment Campaign Targeting Ecommerce Bloggers

eBay has agreed to pay $55.7 million to settle a federal lawsuit stemming from a bizarre and disturbing harassment campaign carried out by former employees against a pair of ecommerce bloggers. The settlement closes one of the tech industry’s most shocking misconduct cases—one that involved stalking, threatening messages, and even mailed packages designed to terrorize the victims.

The lawsuit centered on a 2019 incident in which several eBay security and intelligence staff members targeted the owners of EcommerceBytes, a small blog that frequently covered the company’s business decisions. Upset over critical coverage, the employees launched a coordinated harassment operation that included sending live insects, funeral wreaths, and threatening letters, as well as physically stalking the couple near their home.

Federal prosecutors later described the campaign as “extreme, unacceptable, and criminal.” Multiple former eBay employees were charged and convicted, and the company has spent years trying to distance itself from the scandal. The new settlement—one of the largest of its kind—marks eBay’s attempt to formally close the chapter and move forward.

In its statement, eBay emphasized that the individuals involved acted without authorization and that the company has since overhauled its security and compliance practices. Still, the case remains a cautionary tale about how corporate culture and oversight can fail in dramatic fashion.

The $55.7 million payout sends a clear message: even in the digital age, harassment—whether online or offline—carries real consequences. And for eBay, rebuilding trust after such an incident will require more than a settlement; it will require proving that its internal culture has fundamentally changed.
