Uber has announced a sweeping overhaul of its driver screening and safety procedures as the rideshare giant continues to respond to thousands of sexual assault lawsuits and growing pressure to strengthen passenger protections. The enhanced screening process is designed to identify high-risk applicants before they begin driving while improving ongoing monitoring of existing drivers.
Under the updated program, Uber will expand background investigations beyond traditional criminal history checks by incorporating more frequent continuous monitoring, improved identity verification, and additional reviews of driving records and public safety databases where available. The company is also increasing the use of facial verification technology to help ensure that the person behind the wheel matches the approved driver profile, addressing concerns over unauthorized account sharing.
The changes come after Uber has faced years of legal challenges stemming from allegations that some passengers were sexually assaulted by drivers using the platform. While the company has invested heavily in safety initiatives—including RideCheck, emergency assistance features, encrypted audio recording, and expanded in-app reporting tools—critics and victims' advocates have argued that stronger preventative measures are needed during the driver approval process.
