Square Enix has officially unveiled Final Fantasy Resonance, a brand-new RPG that marks a major milestone for the legendary franchise. Announced during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, the game is the first title in the long-running series to embrace the popular HD-2D visual style that has helped modern classics such as Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake capture players' imaginations. The game launches on October 22, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

A Classic Final Fantasy Reimagined

Final Fantasy Resonance combines beautifully detailed pixel-art characters with modern lighting, visual effects, dynamic camera angles, and 3D environments to create a nostalgic yet contemporary presentation. Square Enix describes the game as a celebration of both classic and modern Final Fantasy, featuring iconic series staples such as crystals, airships, summons, moogles, and memorable heroes from past entries.

One of the most exciting aspects of Resonance is its emphasis on traditional turn-based gameplay. Players will exploit enemy weaknesses, stagger opponents, earn extra turns, and unleash powerful "Resonance" attacks during strategic battles. The game also introduces a unique "Visions" system, allowing legendary Final Fantasy characters from across the franchise to join the player's party and provide special abilities.

While Resonance is based on the story and world of the popular mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, Square Enix has made it clear that this is far more than a simple port. The company says the game has been extensively rebuilt and expanded into a full-fledged console RPG experience, removing the original mobile game's gacha mechanics while enhancing its story, presentation, gameplay systems, and overall scope.

A Huge World Filled with Secrets

Beyond its main story, players can expect a wealth of optional content. Square Enix has confirmed side activities including challenging colosseum battles, legendary weapon hunts, encounters with fan-favorite character Gilgamesh, powerful secret bosses, and numerous hidden discoveries throughout the world.

The announcement generated an immediate wave of enthusiasm across the Final Fantasy community. Many longtime fans have praised the return to turn-based combat and the franchise's first-ever HD-2D presentation, with online discussions highlighting excitement for a modern Final Fantasy that embraces its classic RPG roots.

Final Fantasy Resonance may be one of Square Enix's most intriguing projects in years. By combining stunning HD-2D visuals, classic turn-based combat, beloved franchise traditions, and a reimagined story from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the game aims to bridge the gap between the series' past and future. If early impressions are any indication, Resonance could become one of the most anticipated RPG releases of 2026 when it arrives this October.
