iOS Devices Receive Windows App

A dominant player of digital landscapes, Microsoft introduces a novel 'Windows App,' extending its reach to iPhones, iPads, Macs, and PCs, hinting at expansive aspirations.

The innovative Windows App, compatible with iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Windows, and various web browsers, metamorphoses the erstwhile Windows 365 app into a centralized nexus. This hub facilitates streaming Windows from a distant PC, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, and Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services.

The Windows App, tailored by Microsoft, accommodates multiple monitors, affording flexibility in custom display resolutions, scaling, and device redirection for peripherals such as webcams, storage devices, and printers. Notably absent from the preview version is Android compatibility.

Presently confined to Microsoft's suite of business accounts, indications point towards potential accessibility for consumers. The sign-in prompt on the Windows App for Windows hints at personal Microsoft Account usage, although this feature remains inactive currently.

Microsoft, a veteran in remote PC connectivity with its longstanding Remote Desktop Connection app, ventures into unique branding with the dedicated "Windows App." This nomenclature may well signify Microsoft's overarching agenda of transitioning Windows entirely to the cloud.

Following the departure of Panos Panay, former Surface and Windows chief, in September, Microsoft established a new web-centric team, "Windows and Web Experiences," with a focus on developing AI-infused web services for Windows. The evolution of web-powered features in Windows 11, such as a dynamically updating main search interface, widgets system, and Copilot integration, reflects this shift.

In the context of the FTC v. Microsoft hearing, insights emerged into Microsoft's ambition to migrate Windows fully to the cloud on the consumer front, mirroring its existing provision for businesses through Windows 365. The Windows App could serve as a prelude, paving the way for consumers to access cloud-based PCs and Windows applications on non-Microsoft operating system devices.
